How to slate Songs and Monologues
To slate your songs, use the following formula:
"Hello! My name is Laura Osnes, and I will be singing "NAME OF SONG" from "NAME OF SHOW/WORK" by "NAME OF COMPOSER."
In situations where you have Golden Age songs, it's best to say Rodgers and Hammerstein, or Lerner and Loewe.
You may or may NOT get to sing another song for your audition, so check your school audition requirements so you know. If you are in doubt, only slate ONE song. If you KNOW you will sing two, then announce two!
To slate your monologues, use the following formula:
"Hello! My name is Brad Pitt and I will be performing a monologue from "NAME OF PLAY" by "NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT"
You do not need to say the character's name for Contemporary Monologues. If you are performing a Classical Monologue, you would then say: "Hello! This is Romeo from Romeo and Juliet." You don't need to say by William Shakespeare - they should know that :)
If performing two monologues introduce both at the beginning. So:
"Hello! My name is Brad Pitt and I will be performing a monologue from "NAME OF PLAY" by "NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT" followed by a monologue from "NAME OF PLAY" by "NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT"
